At our vineyard, we exclusively grow cold-climate hybrid grapes varieties developed specifically to thrive in northern growing regions like the Midwest. Unlike traditional European wine grapes (Vitis vinifera), hybrids are created by crossing multiple grape species to combine exceptional wine quality with natural cold hardiness and disease resistance.

For example, Marquette, one of our signature varieties, was developed by the University of Minnesota. Its family tree traces back to Pinot Noir, which contributes classic wine characteristics, along with several hardy North American grape species that provide the ability to withstand harsh winters and resist common vineyard diseases.

While hybrid grapes are relatively new compared to centuries old European varieties, they are rapidly gaining recognition around the world. Many viticulturists consider them to be the future of sustainable winemaking because they require significantly fewer fungicide applications, are better adapted to changing climates, and can thrive with fewer inputs while producing exceptional wines.

Growing hybrids isn't simply about surviving cold winters it's about embracing a more sustainable future for viticulture. By cultivating these innovative varieties, we're able to care for our land responsibly while crafting distinctive wines that express the unique character of our region.

The Varieties We Grow

Brianna

Brianna is an aromatic white grape known for its vibrant, fruit-forward character. Expect bright notes of pineapple, mango, peach, and citrus, often accompanied by delicate floral aromas. It can be crafted into refreshing dry wines or expressive semi-sweet styles that showcase its tropical personality.

Clarion

Clarion is one of the newest releases from the University of Minnesota breeding program. Developed as a disease-resistant, cold-hardy white variety, it produces crisp wines with lively citrus, green apple, and subtle floral notes. Its bright acidity and clean finish make it an exciting addition to the next generation of sustainable white wines.

Itasca

Introduced by the University of Minnesota in 2017, Itasca was bred specifically for high-quality dry white wines. It produces elegant wines with flavors of pear, melon, citrus, and mineral notes, balanced by refreshing acidity. Itasca's excellent disease resistance and low acidity in the vineyard reduce the need for interventions, making it one of the most promising sustainable white varieties available today.

Marquette

Developed by the University of Minnesota, Marquette is considered one of the premier cold-climate red wine grapes. With Pinot Noir in its ancestry, it produces elegant wines with notes of cherry, blackberry, black pepper, and warm baking spices. Its exceptional cold hardiness and disease resistance make it a cornerstone of northern vineyards.

Petite Pearl

Petite Pearl is a newer hybrid celebrated for producing deeply colored, full-bodied red wines with rich flavors of black cherry, plum, and dark chocolate. Naturally resistant to many vineyard diseases, it offers excellent structure, balanced tannins, and outstanding aging potential.
